Pink Panda Asian Diner: Take your taste buds to a Southeast Asian journey

Located at the ground floor of Y2 Residence Hotel in Makati, Erwan Heussaff and Hatch 22’s Pink Panda Asian Diner serves Southeast Asian comfort food. Upon entering, what we first noticed were the exposed pipes hanging from the ceiling, giving the space an industrial feel. The wall-mounted bike in between the letters “F” and “D” added a whimsical charm to the décor and the colorful posters at the buffet area would immediately draw the eye. One could find oneself trying to identify as many pop-culture references in the posters as possible.

Since we were looking for something light, we started our meal with Mango and Catfish Salad. This dish was our favorite from the menu. Mango and papaya strips were complemented by the sweet and tangy honey calamansi dressing. The flaked catfish added texture to every bite. It was a refreshing break from the usual green and leafy salad that we typically order when eating out.

The spring rolls and peanut sauce were delicious but the serving was a bit underwhelming for us. I was not sure if our hungry tummies were at it again but we quickly devoured these in just a couple of minutes.

We were already giving our orders to the wait staff when I noticed that they had Salted Egg Fries on their menu and I knew I had to get it. Hit with the salted egg craze, it was an impulsive decision on my part. My husband, being a gentleman, just nodded to the wait staff to include my request. When the fries arrived, I immediately regretted my decision.  Although the fries were cooked properly and not soggy, we couldn’t taste the salted egg flavor at all. I deliberately avoided my husband’s teasing gaze and pretended to enjoy the fries.

We were torn between Sinigang Tom Yang and Pork Laksa, and we decided on the latter. The broth was rich and creamy but it was too spicy for me even for a laksa. Sadly, I wasn’t able to finish the soup to its last drop because I started to feel the burn in my throat but I managed to enjoy the rice noodles, pork belly and egg it came with.

Note: We asked to split our soup into two small bowls, pictured above was one of the bowls.

Their Sizzling Beef Rendang caught our attention and we ordered it as our main course. The smell was a delight to our senses and we were so excited to eat it. Unfortunately, we had a hard time cutting into the meat without a knife. We asked the manager for one and instead of just giving us a knife, she kindly offered to take the dish back to the kitchen so that they could cut it up for us. We gladly accepted. The smoky flavor of the beef mixed with the spices was a delicious combination. However, it would have been better if it the meat was tender enough to fall off the bone. Kudos to the manager’s customer service though!

Conclusion:

Pink Panda Asian Diner offers a good combination of Southeast Asian flavors. However, we feel that some of the dishes need to be further improved. Would we come back? Maybe, but not anytime soon. We heard that they continuously work on their menu and we look forward to new dishes that they’ll develop in the future. We still recommend to check this place out if you find yourself craving for some Southeast Asian comfort food.
