25 Layers of Juiciness: Kimukatsu Review

There are tons of tonkatsu restaurants to choose from, but for JR and I, one really stands out: Kimukatsu.

Kimukatsu is one of the most famous pork cutlet restaurants in Japan. It has more than twenty branches worldwide and three of which are in Metro Manila. We always visit their Century City Mall branch when we give in to our cravings.

What makes Kimukatsu special? It’s how they prepare their Tonkatsu! They use high quality pork loin which is sliced thin… really thin… 1mm-thin. The slices are then carefully stacked into twenty-five layers, covered in fresh panko (flaky breadcrumbs), and slowly fried to perfection. They let the meat sit for a bit to allow the heat to spread evenly before serving it to your table.

25 Layers of Juiciness: Each bite is packed with texture and taste

They have a wide selection of flavors to choose from. Each set is served with pickled vegetables (not pictured), cabbage (with three different sauces), koshihikari rice, and miso soup (red or white) – all of which you can request for a second (or third, or fourth…) serving. Perfect for our hungry tummies!

The Garlic Kimukatsu is one of our favorites. The minced garlic is not overwhelming at all. Rather, it gives the meat more flavor without the pungent taste.

The Black Pepper Kimukatsu gives an earthy taste to the meat. We find the flavor to be a bit strong but it works well with the sweetness of the tonkatsu sauce.

The Cheese Kimukatsu is a definite must-try. The cheddar cheese oozing from the middle is a sight to behold!

The Ume Shiso Kimukatsu is interesting. It is not as strong as the black pepper and not as mild as the garlic – it is somewhere in between. The sourness of the plum is countered by the sweetness of the meat and the minty taste of the shiso leaf binds these two flavors together.

If you are looking for a more creative take on tonkatsu, try the Creamy Spinach. A creamy white sauce, mixed with spinach, mushroom and onions, is spread on a plain tonkatsu then topped with bacon bits.

Some say that when talking about pork, Kurobuta is king. It is known for its richness, tenderness, and juiciness. Kimukatsu’s Kurobota Set gives justice to this marvelous meat.

They also offer side dishes. We like their Agedashi Tofu and Tatsuta-age.

Agedashi Tofu – P180. The tofu crumbles delicately in your mouth

Tatsuta-age – P180. Deep fried chicken in potato starch batter

If you still have room for dessert, you may try their ice cream. However, the Matcha Green Tea is a bit bitter to our liking.

Kimukatsu is not your typical tonkatsu restaurant. No matter how crazy some flavors sound, they work really well with the tenderness and juiciness of the meat.

We highly recommend giving this restaurant a try and letting us know what you think!
